Challenge: Secondary Online Databases

  • What did you create, and why?
The two articles and a Podcast will be integrated into an Ecology unit in a high school Introductory Biology course to develop better understanding of sustainability in energy usage. Students will read the overview from the Gale Encyclopedia and the Podcast individually online then in small group discussion clarify any misunderstandings answering a set of questions and developing their own further questions for the final small group teacher led instruction.

  • What went well for you? Searching the databases was fast and efficient.

  • What was challenging? The amount of material available to choose from is significant and can take time to sort through and read the articles for content.
  • What did you enjoy? I like that there is a variety of material to choose from in the Science in Context Site. There are articles that are encyclopedic based, current articles from major science publications, Podcasts, etc.
  • What ideas do you have for using this tool with your students, grade level, staff or to communicate with families? Students will read the overview from the Gale Encyclopedia and the Podcast individually online then in small group discussion clarify any misunderstandings answering a set of questions and developing their own further questions for the final small group teacher led instruction. Developing this type of curriculum would be an ideal use of PLT time with other Biology colleagues.
